We Can Do It Ourselves

In June, 2016, MSUS will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. This article focuses on the church's Do-It-Yourself Activities.

MSUS started out as a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) fellowship.  Volunteers did everything from snow shoveling, painting, delivering Sunday services, building cabinets, accompanying hymns, organizing and teaching Sunday School, cleaning, etc.

Our serious discussions about ministry began 20 years ago when we started hosting UTS ministerial interns.  We gave them experience seeing how a parish church worked; they gave us a taste of professional leadership with such tasks as sermons, adult education classes, and RE planning.

MSUS began ministerial leadership in 2002.  Leary about committing to a “permanent” minister, the congregation voted to “experiment with ministry” contracting for a half-time position.
