Help Stock the Mitten Tree and Other Ways You can Help

Help Stock the Mitten Tree

MSUS has a tradition of decorating a Mitten Tree in the Social Hall with hats, scarves, mittens and gloves, even warm socks. These items will be donated to SACA (Southern Anoka Community Assistance), who will distribute them to families in need. Deadline for the MSUS Mitten Tree is December 8.

SACA also welcomes food donations, monetary donations, new gifts (no gently-used unless it is for the clothing boutique, which will be closed during the Christmas season.)

Gift sorting takes place December 13 and 14, and gift distribution is on December 18. There are opportunities to help parents choose gifts on December 18, and to supply lunch and dinner foods for the volunteers who are working. Contact Carlotta S for more details.

Mark Your Calendars for a Day of Service

The MSUS Social Action Committee is planning a Day of Service on Saturday, March 11, 2017. We are putting together a number of opportunities for MSUS members and friends of all ages to give back to the community beyond our walls. The Day of Service will include service projects both at MSUS and offsite at partner charities around the Fridley community.

Race: The Power of Illusion

Thanks to everyone who joined us for special screenings and discussion of Race: The Power of Illusion. If you want to watch any of the episodes, they are available on YouTube: “The Difference Between Us," “The Story We Tell," and “The House We Live In."

Special Collections

The Special Collection on the Second Sunday of November went to purchase Thanksgiving dinners for five families in need, as identified by the Fridley School District. This was our third year providing full Thanksgiving meals for families that otherwise would go without. We collected more than $800, allowing us to also purchase Christmas dinners and keep a reserve for additional Social Action needs.

December’s Special Collection on Sunday, December11, will go to replenish the Minister’s Discretionary Fund, which Rev. Laura can use to help out MSUS families or other social causes as desired.

Past Collections:

September — Alexandra House: $270.00
October — MUUSJA: $273.00
November— Standing Rock: $613

Thanks to you all for your generous donations. If you have any questions or ideas for the Social Action Committee, please contact the committee chair, Brock R, at any time.
